The Importance of Using Your Turn Signals to Avoid Car Accidents

It may not be surprising to learn that many drivers out on the road do not use their turn signals, but what may be alarming is the sad truth that improper use of one’s turn signals accounts for almost 2 million car accidents every single year. The fact that using your turn signal is such a simple act for a driver to do only makes this knowledge more infuriating, especially when it is a problem that has such an easy fix. Until more people realize the importance of using their signal correctly however, it is something that we all unfortunately will need to pay attention to when out on the road.

Society of Automotive Engineers

The Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE has conducted various studies on this subject throughout the years. It is through their research that we have learned about the high number of accidents that are caused by improper use of turn signals, showing that almost half of all drivers either failed to use their turn indicators when changing from one lane to the next nor did they turn them off once the change had been completed. In addition, around 25 percent of drivers studied did not bother to use their turn signal when making a turn at all, which if these numbers are used in comparison to all of the cars out on the road could mean that the risk of a car accident occurs due to improper use of a person’s turn indicator becomes exponentially higher and more dangerous than even the act of distracted driving. Not only is using your turn signal an easy way to avoid getting into an accident it is a simple way to communicate with the other drivers out on the road on what your next move is, this way they do not have to try and guess what you are doing and can respond accordingly. Another reason that using your turn signal is so important is that it is also the law. Police officers have to look out for distracted drivers due to the increased use of cell phones and other technology, but while they search for that they are also putting more effort in pulling over people who do not use their signals correctly which is an encounter that could have easily been avoidable.
