Cherry Hill Woman Struck, Killed by SEPTA Bus in Philadelphia

On Behalf of Garber Law, P.C. | Feb 16, 2017 | Wrongful Death

A Cherry Hill NJ woman was tragically killed after being struck by a SEPTA bus on a Philadelphia street. The bus accident occurred during the early evening hours on 23rd Street in the Center City area of Philly. The Route 9 SEPTA bus was traveling southbound on 23rd Street when the bus driver made a scheduled left turn onto Chestnut Street. That’s when the public transportation vehicle reportedly crashed into the victim. According to law enforcement officials, the victim was pushing a stroller across the street at the time of the fatal bus crash. The victim’s nine-month-old baby was inside the stroller when the accident occurred.

Woman Pushing Stroller Dies in Philly Bus Crash

After the accident, witnesses and passengers on the bus dialed 911 to alert the Philadelphia Police Department to the crash. Philly PA police officers and emergency medical responders rushed to the scene, where they found the victim lying in the roadway. Tragically, emergency crew workers were unable to save the victim. She was pronounced dead shortly after the accident and never made it to a hospital. According to authorities, the force of impact with the SEPTA bus caused the victim to sustain severe internal injuries. Fortunately, the infant child in the stroller that the victim was pushing did not suffer any injuries as a result of the bus accident. Emergency responders took the baby via ambulance to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia so that he could be evaluated. The victim was a 64-year-old woman who lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Authorities identified her as the bus accident victim and passed information along to the media once her family had been notified.

Philadelphia Police Investigate Fatal Bus Crash

Detectives with the Philadelphia Police Department are actively investigating the fatal pedestrian accident and trying to determine exactly what may have caused the crash. Regardless of the outcome of the official investigation, it is possible that the family members of the bus accident victim may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the bus driver and/or the City of Philadelphia for negligently causing the victim’s death. Of course, the viability of any kind of personal injury lawsuit would depend on the exact circumstances of the auto accident, including whether the SEPTA bus driver was acting negligently. Additionally, the local government would potentially be liable for damages under an agency theory of liability because the driver was probably acting within the scope of his job-related duties by driving the Route 9 bus during work hours.
