According to the Cumberland Country coroner, two tractor-trailer drivers were killed in a fiery, fatal crash on Friday night. The crash occurred on I-81 by exit 37, at around 9:30p.m. Both tractor-trailers were reportedly driving southbound when one of the drivers crashed into a guardrail and part of the bridge. Another oncoming tractor-trailer then collided with the vehicle causing both rigs to burst into flames. The coroner, Charley Hall, said that the victims were burned beyond recognition and would have to be identified by their dental records.
Both victims were identified as a 34-year-old man of Florida city and another male, age unknown of California. Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene. Further investigation revealed more details regarding how the accident occurred. The 34-year-old driver was reportedly driving in the right lane of I-81 when he suddenly swerved into the left lane when the accident occurred.
Due to their large, unwieldy nature, tractor-trailer accidents are among the most common and deadly accidents in the United States. Statistics show that 2,900 deaths result from tractor-trailer accidents every year. These accidents leave behind family, friends, and loved ones. Beyond coping with the irreplaceable loss of a loved one, there is the financial distress that comes with funeral arrangements and more. In most cases, these drivers are working while driving these vehicles – workers’ compensation rarely covers the complete damages.
