A major law enforcement operation in Camden County NJ that targeted sex offenders continues to pay dividends for police: another suspect has been arrested in connection with the investigation. The most recent suspect to be placed under arrest as part of the sex crime operation is a 32-year-old Barrington NJ man. According to authorities, the suspect used his cell phone to download and upload images of child pornography. The investigation involved several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crimes Unit, and local police departments in Camden County. Once police had enough evidence in this case, they executed a search warrant at the suspect’s Barrington residence and seized the suspect’s cell phone. Although authorities still need to analyze the electronic device, police have already indicated that the device “showed a history of child pornography.”
Severe Penalties for Endangering the Welfare of a Child in Camden County, NJ
The suspect has been charged with multiple sexual offenses, including distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. In New Jersey, child pornography charges are covered under the same part of the NJ Criminal Code that covers child endangerment. Since N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4b(5)(a) classifies child pornography distribution as a second degree felony, the suspect could potentially be sentenced to as many as 10 years in prison if he is convicted on the most serious charges. Additionally, a convicted for distribution of child pornography would likely result in the suspect being required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law. This could have long-term consequences for the suspect because his photograph would be posted to an online database and his neighbors would be notified of his conviction. Although it is possible to get removed from Megan’s Law, a convicted sex offender typically must wait at least 15 years before applying for removal.
